Fishing Report

This week’s fishing reports have arrived and they certainly look promising.

The steady rise in water temperature means that all our favorite summer species are beginning to show up in large numbers. Bonefish and tarpon bite are on hard at the moment, both on the fly and on spinning rods. We’ve also been told that Permit are being caught consistently, both by those targeting them specifically and by those who’ve caught them accidently while fishing for other species. One of the best species to fish for at the moment is Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi), with schools being found along weed-lines and big fish showing up all over in blue water. Contrary to a few weeks ago, Sailfish aren’t being seen with as much frequency, but some are still getting hooked after limiting out on other species.

All in all it’s a great time to be out on the water– so what are you waiting for? Go fishing!

This week’s weather forecast is looking truly tropical, with temperatures creeping up the high 80′s, reaching close to 90 degrees on Wednesday. Humidity is expected to hover up by 70% all week, with scattered thunderstorms forecasted at their usual 30% chance. We’ll have an updated fishing report for you tomorrow, with most area charters reporting that legal limits have been met each day– great news for you angling enthusiasts! UV index is about a 9-10 this week, which means high SPFs are recommended for all ages. It’s a great week to be out on the water or holed up at the Tiki Bar with a nice cold drink. Make sure to stop in at the Butterfly Cafe for a refreshing and indulgent slice of Key Lime Pie! You won’t be sorry.

Fishing Report

Here in Marathon the fishing is heating up almost as fast as the temperature! The scramble for big grouper began May 1st when the season opened, with most boats reporting limits being met on every trip out. All of the grouper species seem to be getting a big boost from the stricter rules that were recently put into place, with average catches ringing in as significantly larger than they were just three years ago. Dolphin (also known as Mahi-Mahi) are reported to be running hard along the offshore weedlines, with scoolies as well as bigger fish sighted in abundance. Sailfish are also being reported as plentiful, thanks to the warmer weather which results in bold striking of live bait and jumping wildly when hooked. Almost all local charters have reported between 10 and 30 releases a day, which even for this time of year is spectacular.

Sanctuary Friends in Focus Film Series Presents: Sharks At Risk

This Thursday, May 10th, from 6:30 to 8:30 visitors are invited to participate in the most recent offering from Marathon’s own Friends in Focus, a monthly series of lectures and films co-sponsored by the Sanctuary Friends Foundation of the Florida Keys. The film series is free of charge and welcomes all who are interested in learning more about marine life and the beautiful but fragile ecosystem we have here in the Keys.

“Sharks at Risk” paints a compelling portrait of the illustrious predator, feared for centuries and often misunderstood. These powerful creatures play a vital role in the delicate ecosystem of the ocean. Modern fishing practices have greatly diminished the sharks’ populations and habitat, causing a dramatic upset in the natural balance of the ocean. Bring family & friends to this hard-hitting, beautiful film to learn more about sharks and their essential role in our world.

Spotlight on: Sombrero Beach

Nestled away from Highway One is arguably one of the nicest beaches in the Florida Keys: Marathon’s own Sombrero Beach, located at mile-marker 50. With a remote-feeling location away from traffic that is quiet and pristine, Sombrero beach is the perfect place to while away the hours of your Marathon vacation. Weather report

It’s shaping up to be a hot one here in Marathon, Florida, with weekly temperatures expected to rocket upwards to almost 90 degrees on Wednesday before tapering off around 84 degrees for the rest of the week and weekend. Humidity is expected to stay relatively high, hovering between 60% and 70%, with a UV index of 10. That means high SPFs and lots of water, everyone! It’s certainly going to be a great week and weekend to get out on the water and try your hand at fishing with some of Marathon’s famous charters– check with the front desk for suggestions on which boat best fits your needs.

Marathon Community Theatre Presents: Forever Plaid

This goofy musical revue centers on four singers in the 1950s who are killed in a car crash on their way to their first big concert, but who return to fulfill their dreams posthumously.
