Fishing Update from Marathon

We want to urge all our guests to get out on the water NOW while the fishing is truly excellent. Calm seas, warm temperatures and exciting hauls make this the perfect time to get your lines in the water and bring back something exciting for our chefs at the Butterfly Cafe to cook up for you and your family.

All our charter friends have been busy ferrying their customers in and out with some of the nicest yellowtail, kingfish and mackerel that have been seen all season. There are plenty of local companies to choose from when picking a charter, with a variety of price points to fit whatever your needs.

Fishermen who are thus far inexperienced with catching barracuda should be extra sure to get out onto the flats and fish for these beautiful creatures, who put up a truly wonderful fight and are being seen in huge numbers right now. Nothing compares to the first time you come face to face with one of these toothy beauties!

Great bite being given by mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna and mangrove snapper means that you’re almost guaranteed an exciting day (and a full cooler)…so what are you waiting for? Get out there!

Ask our front desk agents here at Tranquility Bay Resort to set you up with everything you need– from charter bookings to bait shops, they’ve got you covered.

Fishing Report for Marathon

The water might be getting colder here in Marathon but the fishing is heating up by the day!

We’re loving the high numbers of sailfish being pulled in by offshore charters recently…those mighty fish really do pack an incredible fight. Equally impressive are the large kingfish being hooked, as well as some big sharks (always a terrifying battle!) and even the occasional blackfin tuna, that elusive prize. While the recent high winds have made it tricky to find a perfect day to get out on the water, we’re hopeful that this week will be calmer than last.

Reef & flats fishing is, as always, excellent in November– you’d be hard pressed to find an area without an abundance of snapper species ready to bite.

Our front desk agents here at Tranquility Bay are always happy to help you select the fishing charter that best fits your needs. Whether it’s a full day out on the water with your family or a last minute shared seat on someone else’s boat, let our Marathon hotel employees lend their expertise. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

Fishing Report for Marathon

November is truly a fantastic time to fish here in the Keys. The arrival of cooler water temperatures signifies a really exciting time for flats, patch reef and deep sea fishing, with some excellent species showing up almost dockside. You can practically walk into the water and catch something fantastic with your own two hands.

As swarms of baitfish push out onto the patch reef areas, pulled by the cooler water, they’re followed by some magnificent mangrove snapper, grouper, mackerel, yellowtails and more. You don’t have to go far out to catch these beauties! And a day of reef fishing is one of the more relaxing and enjoyable activities we can think of.

Farther out, the deep sea fishing takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of blackfin tuna, whose numbers really swell beginning this month. Great numbers of sailfish, wahoo and cobia also abound, so an afternoon of trolling can definitely result in some nice hauls this time of year.

Whatever your fancy, whatever fillet you plan on bringing home– just get out there! Speak to one of our front desk agents here at Tranquility Bay; they’ll be more than happy to help you find your way out onto the water.

January Sale Prices Are Up!

Everyone here at Tranquility Bay loves January– that perfect period of calm and quiet after the craziness of December has ended. The weather is sunny and warm (but not boiling), the streets are calm (but not deserted), and the fishing is excellent (but not crowded). In short, it’s the perfect time for a vacation to the Florida Keys…especially for those of you who need a quiet break from all the previous month’s hectic holiday activities.

After the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Years is over, why not shove the tinsel and wrapping paper aside and take a relaxing, tropical vacation to our beautiful beachfront property? Believe us when we say that nothing cures a case of the “holiday hangovers” like a day in paradise.

January is one of the best months for fishing here in Marathon– with mild temperatures, low winds and an astonishing range of species, it’s truly a wonderful time to be out on the water battling some of your favorites. (We’re especially partial to the excellent Sailfish bite that begins in early January.)

If you’re thinking about taking a vacation to the Florida Keys this winter, look no further: we’ve just published our January sale rates, and boy, do they look good.

Fishing Report for Marathon

Fall fishing continues to be great here in the Florida keys, with almost every charter coming back with a diverse group of species.  There are lots of redfish, snook and cobia in the flats (great for the fly fishermen!) as well as a good number of fish in the back country.  Kingfish have been giving excellent bite out on the reefs and wrecks, along with their little cousin the cero mackerel.   Daytime swordfishing and black fin tuna have been quite productive, with charters reporting large numbers of football-sized tuna and the occasional big one on every trip.  The low number of boats out on the water makes this time of year an especially great time to get out there and put some lines in the water– you’re practically guaranteed to find a high yield spot without anyone to share it with!

Our Marathon hotel is wonderfully situated near some of the best fishing charters around (if we do say so ourselves!) so don’t hesitate to ask our front desk agents to set you up with a half day, full day or shared charter. And remember, our kitchen is always happy to cook your catch just the way you like it! What more can you ask for?

Countdown to Stone Crab Season opener

Well, it’s official: our favorite fall activity is now just one week away. We’re talking, of course, about Stone Crab Season– officially open on October 15th — that beautiful time of year when experts and novices alike can take to the waters to search for the beautiful (and sustainable!) crabs whose tender, sweet claw meat is considered one of the great delicacies of the Florida Keys. This year’s opening week will also include a Claw Eating Contest, so interested parties are encouraged to start their training now (crab cakes for breakfast, anyone?) Registration for the contest can be completed at: http://www.keysfisheries.com/events/

Mark your calendars, the countdown has begun!

Fishing Report for Marathon

Fall is the slow season for most fishing charters down here in the keys, with many locals choosing to go on vacation this time of year due to the lower number of visitors, but for those who are still around there is a bounty of good fishing available.  The reduced numbers of anglers in the water means lower pressure on fish at the reefs and wrecks, with reports coming in that lots of yellowtail and mutton snapper are still available and biting well.  In blue water there are increasing bites of cobia, sailfish and kingfish, with the occasional wahoo giving anglers the fight of their lives.   Also keep in mind that the cooler water that comes with fall makes for great bonefishing, and on the higher tides keep an eye out for great permit and tarpon bites. While certainly not as busy as summer,  fall is definitely an exciting time to get out there and put some lines in the water– so what are you waiting for? Talk to one of the front desk agents at Tranquility Bay to see which charter is right for you!

Fishing Report for Marathon

Here at Tranquility Bay Resort, we’re a little obsessed with lobster. Which is why we’re so excited at the results of 2012′s spiny lobster season thus far– with novices and experts alike reporting back to us that they’re getting their daily limits with ease. We love reading Best Bet Sportfishing Charter’s fishing reports, both because they’re educational (Captain Jason Long is a pro) and because they always lift our spirits when we’re trapped inside, dreaming of the open seas. Long has some great advice for those of you who are looking to get out on the water and grab some tails. Check out his words of wisdom here.

Did you know that our brilliant chefs at the Butterfly Cafe are more than happy to cook your catch for you? However you like it– grilled, blackened, baked or fried– there’s nothing as satisfying as coming back from a charter flush with fish and being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor mere hours afterwards…all without the hassle of having to cook & clean up yourself! Why not try your hand at lobstering this year, and have our kitchens prepare some tasty tails for you and your family? Weekend Fishing Report for Marathon

Scorching hot weather this weekend means it’s a great time to get out on the water where the temperatures are cooler, and where the fishing reports are coming back full of exciting leads! Offshore Mahi-Mahi are back after disappointing numbers over the past few weeks, with Blackfin Tuna being brought in as well. For those who prefer to keep a little closer to shore, reef fishing is as great as it’s been all summer, with Mangrove, Mutton and Yellowtail Snapper being hauled up in abundance, and Black Grouper being spotted as well.

Our pick for an excellent charter boat option this week is “The Best Bet,” whose boats are located at Key Colony Beach Marina at Mile Marker 54. Reports of their recent Blue Marlin catch have us itching to head out on a day trip with those folks. To book a trip or to find out more about what’s biting you can give their Captain Jason Long a call at 305-395-1376.

As always, if you need advice on which trip suits you and your needs best, ask your friendly front desk agent at Tranquility Bay. They’ll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Fishing Report

Now that the wildness of mini lobster season is finally over, we’ll go back to regular fishing for a couple of weeks before the season opens in full.  Tuna are being consistently caught out on the hump, but not in the numbers that we saw a few weeks ago.  Tarpon are also still somewhat available, but again the numbers are a bit patchy compared to their prime season.  The best fishing right now is probably for snapper and the smaller grouper– look near the reef, in holes in florida bay or by bridges.  We have had reports of good numbers from Bahia Honda and some small bridges, and some fantastic days from fishermen at the Seven Mile Bridge. Weather is still expected to be patchy as the summer continues, so stay alert when booking a charter and be aware of refund or rebooking policies ahead of time. And as always, don’t forget to bring sunblock! Summer weather will be at its hottest this month and August, so protect yourself and those you love to insure everyone has a great time out on the water.
