Dixie Swim Club Reprised

Fans of Marathon’s Community Theatre were saddened to see one of its most popular shows, the Dixie Swim Club, close its run in January of this year. Those same fans (and new ones, too!) will be glad to hear that the Dixie Swim Club is BACK for a three-night reprisal reading! Get your tickets now for this week’s limited run.

The Dixie Swim Club
Reprised

by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten
MCT is thrilled to bring the director and cast back from the popular January production of The Dixie Swim Club for our Summer Reading.
The Dixie Swim Club is the story of five Southern women, friends since their days on a college swim team, who gather every year for a long weekend – no husbands, no kids, no work involvement– in a beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Here they laugh, catch up and meddle in each other’s lives. The women, whose lives have taken them in vastly different directions since they left college, help each other get through the challenges of life: motherhood, men, divorce, marriage, jobs, aging, with hilarious and touching repartee. As their lives unfold, we learn that true friendships last forever.

Weekend Fishing Report for Marathon

Scorching hot weather this weekend means it’s a great time to get out on the water where the temperatures are cooler, and where the fishing reports are coming back full of exciting leads! Offshore Mahi-Mahi are back after disappointing numbers over the past few weeks, with Blackfin Tuna being brought in as well. For those who prefer to keep a little closer to shore, reef fishing is as great as it’s been all summer, with Mangrove, Mutton and Yellowtail Snapper being hauled up in abundance, and Black Grouper being spotted as well.

Our pick for an excellent charter boat option this week is “The Best Bet,” whose boats are located at Key Colony Beach Marina at Mile Marker 54. Reports of their recent Blue Marlin catch have us itching to head out on a day trip with those folks. To book a trip or to find out more about what’s biting you can give their Captain Jason Long a call at 305-395-1376.

As always, if you need advice on which trip suits you and your needs best, ask your friendly front desk agent at Tranquility Bay. They’ll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

TGIF

It’s Friday night in Marathon! That means that if you’re looking for something other than the usual (gorgeous)  sunset to watch this evening, there’s plenty of live musical acts to entertain you. Our picks for this evening are as follows…

The Brass Monkey: This iconic dive bar has been entertaining locals and visitors alike for decades. Tonight, you’ll be seeing a legend live when you stop in to see Freddie Bye and the Brass Monkey House Band shake things up. Bye has been playing at the Brass Monkey for over 30 years, and his special brand of rock and roll is always worth a listen.

The Hurricane: Locals have swarmed this fun-loving bar for over 50 years, and tonight The Swinging Harpoon will have you on your feet with their big southern bluesy rock. These boys can play a harmonica like they invented it. Go tonight! You won’t be sorry.

For directions or alternate suggestions on how to spend a Friday evening in Marathon, ask our super friendly front desk agents right here at Tranquility Bay Beach House Resort.

TGIF, everyone!

Fishing Report

Now that the wildness of mini lobster season is finally over, we’ll go back to regular fishing for a couple of weeks before the season opens in full.  Tuna are being consistently caught out on the hump, but not in the numbers that we saw a few weeks ago.  Tarpon are also still somewhat available, but again the numbers are a bit patchy compared to their prime season.  The best fishing right now is probably for snapper and the smaller grouper– look near the reef, in holes in florida bay or by bridges.  We have had reports of good numbers from Bahia Honda and some small bridges, and some fantastic days from fishermen at the Seven Mile Bridge. Weather is still expected to be patchy as the summer continues, so stay alert when booking a charter and be aware of refund or rebooking policies ahead of time. And as always, don’t forget to bring sunblock! Summer weather will be at its hottest this month and August, so protect yourself and those you love to insure everyone has a great time out on the water.

The weather is perfect, the water is warm and the lobsters are waiting to be snatched up. This popular event is always held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of each year–- so what are you waiting for? Get out there and grab some bugs! The season ends at precisely midnight on Thursday, so don’t wait until it’s too late.

Fishing Report

For those of you looking to get out on the water, you’re certainly in for a treat: reef fishing is at a season high right now, with Mutton, Mangrove and Yellowtail Snapper being hauled in at astonishing rates. Local charters are reporting that the Snapper bite is good around the clock– which means that now’s a great time to try out night fishing, everyone’s favorite way to beat the heat and still take home some prize catches. While offshore fishing is also excellent now, with Mahi Mahi being pulled in regularly, the reef fishing is truly spectacular and anglers of all skill levels will definitely enjoy the rod-bending bites they’re sure to get from some of the best fighting (and tasting) fish out there!

As always, feel free to talk to the front desk at Tranquility Bay about setting up a charter or gear rental– they’ll be happy to send you in the right direction.

Happy fishing!
